Max Band

Max Band (1900-1974) was born in Naumiestis. He went to school and worked as a teacher in Marijampolė. He belonged to the École de Paris (the Paris School) art movement and between 1926 and 1939 he held five individual exhibitions in Paris, three in New York and two in Lithuania. His subtle psychological portraits – with expressive eyes and figure compositions from Jewish life – made him famous. He chose the themes of motherhood, weddings and often painted children. In his pictures he deeply and subtly revealed the spiritual state of people. From 1954 he lived in the USA.
